It’s no secret that email marketing is incredibly powerful. Any internet marketer knows what you can do when you have an email list – in fact it’s probably the single most valuable asset in your online business. Yet so many people get it SO wrong. The mistakes people make with email marketing really affects their ability to make money from their list.
1. Selling all the time
Ok so there is no getting away from the fact that the ultimate aim of email marketing is to sell things and make money, BUT what most people don’t realise is that doing it all the time is very damaging to your business.
What happens when people receive sales email after sales email, day in day out? They get tired and sick of it!
If you want to make more money from your marketing efforts, you need to do other things AS WELL as selling. That means emailing people great free content (and I do mean GREAT – not just any old rubbish). If you can start making people actually want to open your emails then you will start to see some incredible results.
2. Being a faceless email marketer
As an email marketer the chances are that you are working alone. Talk directly to your subscribers and make yourself seem like a human. Trust me – this works because it means you will build a relationship with your subscribers. Use the fact that it’s just you to your advantage.
3. Sending HTML emails
This might not really be a mistake (many email marketers use HTML and graphics in their emails) but it can be a mistake when you don’t understand the process. The number of different pieces of email software and email services which people use makes HTML emails difficult to get right. There’s a good chance that a large proportion of the people who you send the email to won’t see it in the way you intended them to.
4. Not proofreading your emails
This is one of the most common mistakes people make with email marketing. In fact I am constantly amazed at the number of people who don’t seem to bother proof reading their emails before they send them. It doesn’t just involve checking for spelling and grammar either. Always send the email to yourself before you mail it to your subscribers. Do the links within the email work and do they point to the place you wanted them to? Is the email formatted correctly and does it show consistently in different email software?
