Email Marketing for Your Small Business

email marketingSo, you get your small business a website, and now you are discovering that you just HAVE to have an email marketing list too!

Is that really true?  Do all small businesses need to get in to email marketing?

No, I don’t think it is.  Personally, I think that a small business like say, a coffee shop, would benefit more from a facebook page, a twitter account and some mobile marketing – rather than email marketing.

If you aren’t selling online, then an email list is not going to do you that much good.  People tend not to open their email for a couple of days, so timely announcements would do much better in an immediate platform (facebook, twitter, mobile marketing).

However, if you ARE selling something online, direct to the consumer, then an email marketing list would probably be great for you!

You’ll need a few things to get started:

1) Someone who will be in charge of crafting and sending out emails

You want someone likeable who can write in a conversational tone, like this.  You don’t want to send out emails that read like newspaper articles.

2) an email marketing service or software program

I like Aweber.  It’s got everything you’ll ever need.

3) a message

You can make it a personal and dynamic extension of your website.  You can invite people to come to your website, you can invite people to check out your new products or tell them about sales on your old products.

Your message is an important part of your list.  What is is that people come to you for?  What is it that you know the absolute most about?  This is the information that your customers want you to share with them!

If you really aren’t sure what you should be doing with an email marketing list, a good idea is to sign up for some in your field – maybe a complementary list, or a competitors list.

Sign up for the list and pay attention to the email messages you get. What is their tone?  What format are they in? How do they make you feel?  Do you feel compelled to click on any of the links in the message?  What are the messages asking you to do?  Do you think the messages are probably successful or unsuccessful and why?

If you look at someone elses email marketing messages and you form an opinion either for or against them, well now you have an idea of what to do with your own list!  Either something similar or something nothing like what those other people have done!

Sign up for the email marketing service provider, set up your list, input some followup messages, put the signup form on your website, and then start getting people to sign up for you list.  That’s all there is to do for now, and everything else will naturally evolve from there.  Get started in email marketing today!
